The podcast episode features Dr Jason Barrett, a pharmacist from Oklahoma, who shares his personal health journey from being at the pinnacle of health to a decade-long battle with debilitating chronic illnesses. Dr Barrett, a former athlete raised on a cattle ranch, began experiencing “crazy symptoms” around age 27, which he attributes to a poor standard American diet and sedentary lifestyle. His initial problems manifested as severe TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues, which escalated rapidly, leading to extreme pain, inability to open his mouth, weight loss, chronic fatigue, mental fog, and emotional distress.
His medical odyssey involved numerous specialists, including dentists, a TMJ specialist who administered multiple Medrol injections and appliances for three years, a primary care physician who diagnosed hypothyroidism, a neurologist who found no neurological issues, and a rheumatologist. Over years, Dr Barrett was prescribed a cascade of medications, including NSAIDs, DMARDs, and powerful immune suppressants like Enbrel, Humira, Cosentyx, and Xeljanz. Despite strict adherence to these treatments, his condition worsened, with new symptoms constantly appearing, such as severe cervical pain, rheumatoid fingers, psoriatic lesions, sacral inflammation, and bilateral ankle swelling, leading him to feel like a “zombie”. He was given an initial diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis, which later expanded to include Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis, with his rheumatologist stating they were “close cousins” treated the same way.
The turning point came with a devastating diagnosis of significant erosion at C1 and C2 vertebrae in his neck, posing a risk of fracture and severe neurological damage, potentially affecting respiration. Faced with options like highly invasive surgery with guaranteed collateral damage or simply “wait and see,” Dr Barrett reached his “rock bottom”. Desperate, he explored various diets—vegan, autoimmune protocol (AIP), no-starch, keto—with some limited relief. The breakthrough occurred after opening his own pharmacy and a nutraceutical representative suggested a food sensitivity panel. This test, which no previous doctor, including those at the Mayo Clinic, had recommended, revealed he was “allergic to everything” except animal proteins and fats, essentially pointing him towards a carnivore diet.
Despite initial skepticism, Dr Barrett committed to a strict carnivore diet, starting with beef, salt, and water. Within two weeks, he experienced a dramatic reduction in inflammation, surpassing the effects of all previous medications, including the “big guns”. Over a year of strict carnivore eating, he lost 50-60 lbs, regained energy to work out, improved his sleep, mood, and relationships. Through trial and error, he further refined his diet to the “lion diet” (beef, salt, water), discovering sensitivities to dairy, pork, and cured meats. Reintroducing these foods even briefly resulted in immediate inflammation, water retention, and a decline in energy and mood. He concluded that “nothing tastes better than good health,” affirming the carnivore diet saved his life.
Now, Dr Barrett leverages his personal experience and pharmacist position to advocate for root cause medicine, sharing his story and dietary recommendations with his customers who are stuck in the “complex web of problems” created by symptomatic treatment. The host, Dr Anthony Chaffee, reinforces this critique, highlighting how modern medicine often fails to address the root causes of disease, instead focusing on masking symptoms, driven by profitable business models of “Big Pharma,” “Big Food,” and “Big Insurance”. They discuss how chronic and autoimmune diseases, once rare, have surged, linking this to post-agricultural diets, industrial seed oils, and the suppression of scientific findings by corporate interests. Both doctors advocate for public awareness and legislative action to hold corporations criminally accountable for knowingly causing harm and withholding effective treatments.
